What is a FUE transplant?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a form of hair transplant surgery that involves the replacement of the thinning or balding area by sewing back healthy hair follicles taken from a donor site. The donor area usually is extracted from the back or sides of the head. Otherwise, body hair transplantation is typically done if you don’t have enough donor hair on your scalp. In this case, facial and body hair is used, including beard or chest hair, as transplanted hair to be extracted.

The procedure includes the removal of donor grafts which are performed using a device that extracts individual hair follicles. These are then harvested into their naturally occurring groups to be transplanted in the recipient area(s). Unlike a Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), which requires extracting using a strip excision, the FUE hair transplant depends on taking from individual hair follicles for more natural looking results. This assures that the entire procedure is harmless, results-focused, and provides a much speedier recovery time than other treatments.

How Does the Treatment Process Work?

Consultation

Prior to surgery, one of our esteemed trichologists will provide you with advice and recommendations based on your first consultation with them. During the appointment, they will determine your hair type and its current condition, your eligibility for surgery, and what procedure will be performed. They will also need to check for allergies, and any underlying conditions you have to ensure the surgery will be a safe process.
A week before, it is highly suggested to stop smoking to ensure the best possible results during the recovery stages. Three days before the procedure takes place, it is also recommended not to take anti-inflammatory medication, not consume any alcohol, and not get too much sun exposure.

Shaving

The trichologist will shave both the donor site and the recipient site. The donor grafts are where the transplanted hair follicles will be extracted, and the recipient site is where they will be re-implanted with hair that is still able to grow.

Harvesting

The FUE surgery will begin with an extraction, removing follicles from the donor area using our high-quality micro punch device. This is typically done at the back or sides of the head, guaranteeing a smooth and seamless extraction. You won’t feel any pain during the process, and the donor area will be transparent, with the existing hair able to cover the results from the extraction.

Preparation

The individual hair follicles that were extracted during the harvesting process will then be prepared to be re-implanted. Unlike FUT hair transplants, FUE hair transplants remove individual follicular units, rather than grafts with natural groupings of 1-3 hairs.

Implantation

The expected timeframe for hair growth should be three months after the procedure, and it will continue to lengthen over time.
