Losing hair is a natural part of life that, while inevitable, can be preventable with the help of hair restoration surgery.
Balding is quite common among men, with almost 1 in 2 men in Australia balding in their 40s, according to the Australian Government Department of Health’s Healthy Male initiative. There are even statistics showing women (50%) will experience hair loss at some point in their lifetime, based on an article from the Australian Journal of General Practice.
Despite these statistics, there are many treatments available you can do to counteract this and beat the odds. Receiving a hair transplant surgery is a great solution for those who want to continue having full, healthy, and lush hair throughout their entire lifetime.
A follicular unit transplantation, otherwise known as a FUT hair transplant, is designed to improve your hairline design and give you your desired coverage of hair. It is a popular choice for treatment due to its natural and seamless appearance after recovery.
At Medici Cappelli, we are passionate about giving our hair transplant patients a chance to restore back their hair and their self-confidence. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, we are experts in providing full-time non-surgical and surgical hair restoration, including FUT hair transplants and FUE hair transplants. What is a FUT Hair Transplant?
The Follicular Unit Transplant technique involves a strip method extraction and hair grafts, which is where follicular units are removed from the donor site in a single strip. These follicular units are split by micro grafts, which include 1-3 hairs that are presented similarly as they naturally appear on the scalp. The transplanted hair is then replanted in the donor area and sewn back, giving your hair the ability to grow through the linear scar. This differentiates from FUE hair transplantation which is removed in singular follicular units.
How Does the Process Work?
Consultation
Before the surgery takes place, one of our qualified trichologists will have a consultation with you to see what kind of hair loss you are experiencing and if you are deemed fit for surgery. The trichologist needs to check if you have any allergies regarding anaesthesia or bleeding issues.
Harvesting
Follicles are gently removed from the back of the head using FUT surgery, assuring you won’t feel irritation throughout the entire procedure. The donor area will not be visible post-surgery, as the sewn hair will provide adequate coverage.
Preparation
The hairs that were harvested are then organised for re-implantation. Because of the range of hairs in every follicle unit, our surgeons will categorise them based on whether they have single, double, or triple follicles.
Implantation
The trichologist will then place micro grafts into the recipient area(s). This will be performed using our state-of-the-art ARTAS Hair Transplant device, which will provide quick and precise implants taken from your donor site(s). During this time, you can relax by taking a nap and watching movies.
Post-Surgery Treatment & Recovery
After the procedure is finalised, we will provide you with post-surgery advice and instruction to make sure you get desirable results. The incisions should heal after a few weeks. However, the hair will take a few months to grow back. Typically, you will find new hair growth after 3 months post-surgery, and it will resume to grow throughout your lifetime. Keep in mind, you may experience shock loss after a few weeks, which is actually a good sign that the hair growing back will be much healthier and stronger.
How to Tell if a FUT Transplant is Right for You?
- Age: FUT hair transplants are typically done on people who are 25 years of age or more. Hair loss patterns are much more unpredictable in people below the age of 25.
- Balding Area: FUT surgery is ideal for those experiencing hair loss at the crown area.
- Condition: To be eligible for FUT surgery, you need to have a sufficient amount of hair that can be used as a graft. Typically, men who have Androgenic Alopecia or Male Pattern Baldness are recommended for the procedure because of their Norwood hair loss pattern. Women who commonly experience this condition would have a Ludwig hair loss pattern which is where there is thinning hair at the crown area. However, if you’re experiencing hair loss due to Alopecia Areata or Thyroid issues, you may not be deemed fit for surgery.
- Hair Colour: The perfect candidate for the surgery is suggested to have a hair colour that is akin to their own skin tone.
- Hair Density: For the best results, it is highly recommended for people with a high hair follicle thickness.
FUE vs FUT: What’s the Difference?
FUT and FUE transplants both harvest and implant individual hair follicular units. FUT surgery involves our trichologists removing a strip from the donor site to remove and implant the hair follicles to the recipient site. However, during an FUE hair transplant, the trichologist will extract individual hair follicles straight from the scalp than using a strip. FUT is highly recommended if you require an extensive amount of hair follicles to be grafted, making the process much simpler to perform.
What Are The Benefits?
Quick & Seamless Recovery
The time it takes to recover post-procedure typically lasts for 10-12 days. However, if you are experiencing discomfort, please speak to our trichologists to prescribe you the appropriate treatment.
Healthier & Stronger Hair
FUT treatment is highly recommended due to its ability to harvest follicles where the hair is bare and result in grafts that are highly durable. The surgery will result in a tiny, linear scar which should be less than a diametre of 1mm, giving your hair a natural looking result. The procedure is implanted with natural groupings of 1-3 hair follicles, giving you aesthetically natural looking hairlines and a fuller overall distribution.
