What is alopecia?
Alopecia is a condition which causes hair loss from one or multiple areas of an individual’s head, face, or body. The most common types of alopecia are male and female pattern baldness and alopecia areata, but less common hair loss can occur from medical treatments or conditions. Individuals suffering from alopecia can find it distressing sometimes, especially if the hair loss is permanent. Although some may find it easier to accept, others may find it embarrassing, affecting their confidence, self-esteem, and mental health.
Female and male pattern baldness
Androgenetic alopecia, known as male and female pattern baldness, involves hair loss and thinning in adult men and women. Genetics and hormones play a significant role in determining whether you may experience hair loss. However, the causes and symptoms between men and women vary.
For men, androgenetic alopecia can begin after puberty, developing gradually over time when the hair begins receding at the temples and hairline. The hair on the crown of the head may start to thin out before eventually developing into a bald patch which gradually widens. Advanced cases of male pattern baldness can result in a ‘horseshoe’ pattern where hair only grows around the back and sides of the head. Although this usually occurs with older men, young men can also be affected. Androgenetic alopecia in men is an inherited condition affecting how the hair on your scalp responds to certain male hormones. If the men in your family have a history of male pattern baldness, you may likely develop this as well.
However, female pattern baldness differs slightly from its male equivalent. Women rarely experience a receding hairline or bald patch on the crown of their head but instead experience hair thinning across the whole scalp. Also, androgenetic alopecia in women can develop at any age, developing and progressing in bursts rather than gradually, but some women find the hair loss more noticeable after experiencing menopause. Genetics and hormones play a large part in the development of female pattern baldness. Hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome are known for having hair loss as a symptom.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is significantly different to androgenetic alopecia, where the hair falls out in patches and is caused by your immune system attacking the hair follicles. This hair loss is very common, affecting individuals of any age, sex, or ethnicity, and can occur on your scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, face, and other body parts. The condition can develop slowly and recur after so many years between instances but depends on the extent of hair loss and regrowth, which varies for every individual. Each case of alopecia areata is different, with some sufferers only experiencing it temporarily, whereas others may have the autoimmune condition for the rest of their life. Researchers are not sure of the exact cause of this condition which causes the immune system to attack the hair follicles mistakingly. Still, possible causes have been identified, including genetics, a vitamin D deficiency, and certain health conditions such as down syndrome and thyroid disease.
Treatments for Alopecia
Here on the Gold Coast, treatments for alopecia vary from person to person. What is effective for one individual may not work for the next. We understand this can be a very frustrating process for anyone suffering from any form of alopecia, which is why we endeavour to consult with patients to understand their journey with hair loss. We consider the type of hair loss they have experienced, the amount of hair lost or thinned out, their current health and medical history, and what outcomes they hope to achieve with one of our alopecia treatments before we create a treatment plan tailored to their hair restoration goals.
We specialise in alopecia treatments at Medici Capelli on the Gold Coast. The treatments that we offer for alopecia include:
- Ultimate hair growth supplements for alopecia
We have clinically developed our hair growth supplements to help hair loss sufferers achieve thicker, longer, and stronger hair for both men and women. Our growth supplements are the herbal alternative to hair growth medications, containing clinically proven hair thickening vitamins, minerals, and nutraceuticals. The supplements harmlessly bind to the androgen receptors on your hair to prevent your body from attacking and shrinking your hair follicles. As the hormone responsible for hair loss cannot bind to your strands, this gives them a chance to continue their growth cycle, growing strong and healthy again. All our products are clinically and laboratory tested. - Hair growth medication for alopecia
Hair growth medications come in a topical solution or foam in 2% or 5% strength formulas to help achieve healthy hair growth for men and women suffering from alopecia. It has proven to stimulate the hair follicles, encouraging new hair growth, and strengthening the strands, with 76% of people obtaining some moderate hair regrowth, 40% average to good hair regrowth, and 8% experiencing dense regrowth. Individuals who have used the product also found an increase in their hair’s thickness and density. It has been found even more successful when used in conjunction with other treatments, such as a scalp roller and specialised hair products. - Specialised shampoo and conditioner for alopecia
Medici Capelli’s specialised topical products, including our Scalp Cleanser, Follicle Response, Shampoo, and Vitamin Plus Conditioning Treatment, all contain essential vitamins and minerals designed to cleanse the scalp and hair gently without the use of harsh chemicals. Our products can revitalise the scalp and hair to relieve individuals of various scalp conditions. - Skin needling (derma roller/scalp roller) for alopecia
A derma or scalp roller is a micro-needling skin device designed to trigger your body’s natural healing responses while stimulating blood flow and collagen in the targeted area. Studies have shown that the treatment can promote healthy hair growth and, when used in conjunction with other products, provide extra absorption to reach the hair follicles for more potent results.
